The use of emerging technologies at the enterprise level is increasing on a global scale, yet many companies are failing to capitalize on the benefits, according to the 2019 edition of the Global CIO Survey conducted by Logicalis. This study, which analyzed responses from 888 CIOs around the world, found that 61% of companies are currently using Internet of Things (IoT) technologies, while only 9% of them believe they are gaining some business advantage from these technologies.
The survey reveals that IoT is increasingly being implemented in the enterprise world, its use increased by 15% compared to the survey conducted in 2018. The results also show that IoT is being used to improve various business processes. The most common use cases: creating new products and services (26%), seeking operational efficiency (23%) and improving existing products (22%). The data also shows that 41% of companies use Artificial Intelligence (AI, for its acronym in English) in some way, which represents twice as many as in 2018.
One in ten respondents (9%) believe their organization is succeeding in understanding the benefits of technology such as Artificial Intelligence in some business areas, however, 44% believe they are not successful at all in this area. The areas where companies are having greater benefits in the implementation of this technology are: IT (33%), marketing (29%) and information security and compliance (28%).
"It's great to see emerging technologies like AI and IoT starting to come to the fore. Despite the growth in the use of AI, companies are still hesitant about its benefits. These technologies have the potential to bridge the gap between customer data and the information to be processed, providing a strong competitive advantage to those who choose to invest in them. Companies that fail to incorporate these technologies and digital transformation will struggle to remain competitive in the modern world," said Mark Rogers, CEO of Logicalis Global.
"However, the results show that organizations are not yet fully prepared to understand and see the benefits of these technologies for their business. Navigating the complex world of these types of technologies can be overwhelming and complicated for CIOs to manage. The key to overcoming this lies in creating performance metrics that narrow the focus and encourage company-wide participation. Working with a third party can help companies with their digital transformation plan and help them make better use of these technology trends," concludes Rogers.
