The inauguration of the Rivera Technological Pole, with an estimated enrollment of 400 students, is one more in the string of such ventures that proliferate throughout the country.
The subjects to be taught include chemistry, physics, environmental control, forestry wood technology, environmental control, mechatronics (a discipline related to electronic and computer engineering) and logistics engineering.
The facilities have been functioning as such since the beginning of the year, but the official inauguration took place this week. It has eight classrooms, 14 high-tech laboratories and an amphitheater with capacity for 120 people.
The fact that the inauguration of the new educational complex is the result of a binational agreement between Uruguay and Brazil is a novel and promising fact in terms of the potential that it implies, particularly in the tertiary education modality offered by UTU. The figures are eloquent in this regard: while in 2005 there were 18 degree programs at the national level, now there are 73.
The agreement with Brazil was signed in 2007 and is now beginning to bear its first fruits. Binational courses will be held at the Rivera Industrial Park in a three-storey building with state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.
It should be noted that the Rivera Technological Pole is not the only one in the country, since similar modules have been inaugurated in Tacuarembó and Durazno, in addition to the existing one in Montevideo, which operates in the Technological Laboratory of Uruguay (LATU).
In addition to the aforementioned synergy with the Brazilian education system, at least two positive elements can be noted in the promotion of tertiary education in Rivera. The first is that, according to the president of CODICEN, Wilson Netto, in the department there was an increase in tertiary level graduates, totaling 48% in 2016, compared to 22.8% in previous years. The second is the progress that means in tertiary education, which materialized at the national level with the creation and implementation of the Technological University of the Technological University of the interior (UTEC).
