It meets periodically to exchange knowledge and conduct policy analysis in order to implement actions and develop recommendations to ensure opportunities for gender-equal access and sustainability in education, employment, production and research.

It was created in 2016 at the initiative of the Office of Planning and Budget (OPP), the National Institute of Women-Ministry of Social Development (Inmujeres-MIDES) and the Faculty of Engineering (FING - University of the Republic). It is currently composed of the following institutions:

Its objectives are:

  • Develop surveys, analysis and monitoring of information that contribute to identifying gender gaps and inequalities in educational, employment and academic trajectories linked to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
  • Generate recommendations for the construction and/or updating of public policies aimed at improving gender equality in these areas.
  • Contribute to cultural change to promote gender equality in all fields of development linked to science, innovation and technology.
  • Promote access, involvement and retention of girls, adolescents and women at all levels of education - formal and non-formal - in STEM areas.
  • Encourage the generation of incentives and tools that promote gender equality in the academic, business, labor, science, innovation and technology fields.

One of the main projects implemented by MIMCIT in 2016-2018 is SAGA-UNESCO (STEM and Gender Advancement) focused on providing solid evidence-based tools to governments and policy makers to increase the visibility, participation and recognition of women in STEM areas. In fact Uruguay was the pilot country to implement it. Some of the initiatives developed/implemented can be seen here.
