The growth of software engineering and ICT in Uruguay has become a great opportunity for the generation of skilled jobs for young people, said the Minister of Industry, Carolina Cosse.

"When we talk about changing the productive map of Uruguay, we talk about incorporating technology, engineering and innovation," he summarised.

Among the actions implemented, Cosse listed the creation of stimulus programmes for software companies, non-refundable funds for project financing and a digital tool for companies and public bodies to acquire goods with an innovation component, whose intellectual property belongs to their creators, test them and reformulate them.

Another line of work is the decentralisation of the software sector in the interior of the country. To this end, the Ministry of Industry, Antel and the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (CUTI) grant benefits to Montevideo companies in the sector that develop projects in cities in the interior of the country and hire local human resources.

On regulatory issues, Cosse reported that the ministry is drafting a bill proposing to grant tax exemptions to the research and development sector, similar to those for the software industry.

"The importance of this industry is the great opportunity it gives to provide skilled work, marked by multidisciplinary work with other sectors and skills. When we talk about changing the productive map of Uruguay, it means incorporating technology, engineering and innovation, in sectors where they already exist and in new ones," the minister emphasised on Wednesday 17.

Cosse participated in the "First Software Engineering Conference" to be held at the Faculty of Engineering, together with its dean, María Simon, and the director of the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII), Fernando Brum, among others.
