ICTs are essential for people's development, UN says

17/07/17

ICTs are essential for people's personal and professional development, but they can also be very useful for their survival, according to a report released today by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).

"Accelerating progress, using technology to achieve the Global Goals" is the title of the report prepared by ITU at the request of the UN.

The United Nations wants to have a clearer and more practical vision of how ICTs can help human development, in such practical aspects as the ability to communicate via mobile phone of people "on the move", be they migrants, internally displaced persons or refugees, or the possibility of checking weather forecasts.

The text identifies five key issues.

The first is to assume that there are 3.9 billion people who are not "connected" and cannot use the resources available on the network, so one of the main objectives is to enable them to be connected.

The second aspect revealed by the report is that ICTs are of great use to societies that are still heavily dependent on agriculture, as they can use satellite images to monitor climate, land status, water resources, and so on.

According to the text, ICTs are currently at the same level of importance as access to water, food or energy, since having them can mean the possibility of finding a job and earning an income.

The report stresses in its fourth point that the revolution must happen now, that global access to ICTs must happen as soon as possible to prevent the gap between the "connected" and the "unconnected" from widening.

Finally, the report urges all UN agencies to collaborate with each other in order to push forward this agenda which, if achieved, will help to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
