The technology giant IBM announced yesterday that it will invest US$ 5.5 million until 2020 in the first center of solutions dedicated to blockchain in Latin America, which will be located in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo.

This new "hub" of a technology that guarantees the veracity of Internet transactions is designed to help "customers build a new generation of blockchain applications on the IBM Cloud platform, with the highest levels of security," the company said in a statement sent to Efe.

The center "allows clients throughout Latin America to address new forms of business transactions," said Ana Paula Assis, general manager of IBM Latin America, quoted in the note.

With this infrastructure, which will start operating in the second quarter of 2018, Brazil joins the group of 5 countries - UK, USA, Canada, Japan and Germany - that have IBM Cloud infrastructure with blockchain capabilities.

The investment will also offer customers in Latin America of the U.S. firm "a unique place to develop the entire lifecycle of commercial solutions 'blockchain', from the beginning, in IBM Cloud," the company added.

This "hub" will be connected to another unit called "IBM Cloud Garage", also recently landed in Sao Paulo, which brings together Design Thinking, Agile and DevOps practices to help companies of all sizes and industries to quickly build new applications and software.

Blockchain, as it is known, is the same technology behind the rise of bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, functioning as a highly secure digital exchange platform without the need for intermediaries.

According to the consulting firm IDC, this technology in Latin America will have one of the fastest growth rates until 2021, with 127.3%.
