SobreCiencia spoke with Pablo Pereira, commercial director and founding partner of Armor Bionics, who is in California (USA) where he presented the project in front of a qualified group of Silicon Valley investors.
Pereira explained that it is a technology company that applies engineering to medicine and specialises in 3D modelling and image segmentation. The company also offers a straightforward set of cloud-based tools to bridge the gap between image acquisition solutions and physical materialisation. This allows doctors to get their hands on a 3D scale of what they will find in the patient's body before operating, reducing risks, time and costs.
"We take patient scans and transform them into 3D volumes, bring them to reality, print them in three dimensions and give them to the doctor so that he can do all the analysis prior to the operation in his own hands, so that he can plan with a model exactly like what he is going to find in the organism. This technology allows us to reduce risks and costs because, for example, in surgeries that take many hours, having practised it beforehand saves a lot of time. It is also widely used in universities because you can take the patient's case anywhere," he explained.
The company, which as of this year has a virtual branch in the US, has worked with medical cases from different parts of the world such as Turkey, Russia, Italy, Mexico, Dubai and Spain.
"We've done hearts, aneurysms, lots and lots of things. The scale is one to one, because it has to be the same as what the doctor is going to see when the surgery happens. Today we are visiting accelerators, venture capitalists and large companies with which we can do new work, see who we can partner with and find out what the big companies in the world are doing in this area. In any case, our idea is not to have operations in the US but to have them in Uruguay. We understand that our country is the perfect place to do this, yes, to look for clients in the US, but to continue working from here," he explained.
Pereira added that the study and knowledge of design, engineering and medicine formed the idea of creating this company, and that this knowledge is what adds value to the product and to the original idea.
- In addition to this knowledge, we are gaining more and more experience, success stories and the capacity for international projection. Our idea is to reach the greatest number of people in the world and make surgeries safer and patients have a better quality of life," he concluded.
