Tips for safe shopping on Cyber Monday

Safe online shopping is possible as long as precautions are taken by users and merchants to take care of this experience.

For years, purchases on discount days such as Cyber Monday have been higher than on normal days, as reported by CEDU (Chamber of the Digital Economy of Uruguay) in its reports on trends and analysis of online shopping in Uruguay; therefore, there are also greater risks of fraud to which shoppers and businesses can be exposed. Therefore, from Evertec we want to share some tips and recommendations so that your online sales and purchases are safe:

  • Check that the website you are accessing is secure - how? Look for the padlock icon in the shop's URL to identify trustworthy websites.
  • Be wary of emails with dubious provenance and non-standard offers.
  • If your card issuer offers it, it is a good idea to sign up for an alert service to receive real-time notifications of your payments by text or email.
  • Before you "buy" an offer that comes to you through various digital channels, it is a good idea to type the website address of the shop or offer into your browser and verify that the offer really exists.
  • Contact the merchant or your card issuer directly if a charge for you is not recognised.
  • Never access your issuer's or bank's website from links or shortcuts that come from emails, text messages or others.
  • Always keep your passwords secure, if possible do not repeat them or use them for different accounts.
  • Do not send your passwords via email or text messages.

If you have an online retailer and want to learn more about how to quickly identify if you are exposed to fraud or understand what to look out for to ensure your customers' experience, we invite you to review this Webinar on fraud prevention strategies in e-Commerce.
