Equity in TI - Meeting Milagros Olivera

24/02/21

As part of the "Equity in IT: Bridging the Gap" campaign, we invite you to meet different women in the IT industry and discover what a day in the role they play is like.
Reading time: 2 minutes

We present Milagros Olivera, an example of reconversion. She found in the IT Industry the possibility to combine a profession she enjoys with being able to be present for her family. We invite you to know her story.

What do you do? What is your main responsibility at work?

I am currently working as a functional tester and we provide service to an American company. My responsibility is to test the different pages and report bugs as I find them.

Describe a typical work day:

In my case it would be to check the mail to see if the company sent me a link to test. I do the tests on the devices they request and then I report them so they can be solved.

How did you come to this job?

I arrived through Reconvertite who made the link with Apptim, the company by which I was hired here in Uruguay.

How long have you been involved in the IT Industry?

Since 2019 when I began to consider changing a little direction. I am Lic in Nutrition graduated 10 years ago, I felt that I needed to do something else and it occurred to me to enter the world of technology, just that year began the Reconvertite program and I did not hesitate and I postulate. I was selected among the 10 women of Salto. All 2019 was a year of much learning and linking with referents in the field of technology.

During 2020 I was able to do some volunteer testing work remotely, as the situation led to that and actually it was also what I was looking for. This year I started working formally with this Uruguayan company. The fact of being able to work remotely and with my own time was what made me change course a little bit. I am a wife and mother of 2 children of 2 and 5 years old and a third one is on the way. This work methodology helps me to be able to combine the fact of being a super-present mom and being able to develop myself in another field without neglecting any of the "jobs".

What do you enjoy least about what you do?

I don't think I can evaluate that yet because for now everything is going as planned, plus I just started formally.

What's the best part of what you do?

To be able to organize my time and not depend on having to go to the office and follow a schedule. I can do it from wherever I want and at whatever time I can.

What has been the most memorable moment/memory linked to your work?

As I haven't been in the business for long, I haven't had the opportunity to have something that has marked me as something to remember...

If you weren't doing this, what would you be doing now?

Possibly I would be working as a Lic in Nutrition in some health center following a strict schedule, something I didn't want for my life, at least at this stage of my family's growth.

Any tips or messages you would like to share for those who are interested in the technologies or would like to work in the industry.

Especially to women who are very few in the industry, that they are encouraged to try, there are a lot of paths that can be followed in my case it occurred to me to start with Testing but it may be that in a few years I end up in a different role.
