Consolidate and optimize your IT environment: preparing your business for the future in a post-pandemic world.

26/08/20

Companies around the world have been forced to implement transformation projects that would typically take months, or even years, in a matter of weeks.

The coronavirus crisis has had a profound impact on how businesses operate. Preparing for the future has taken a back seat to focusing on surviving in the here and now.

As restrictions ease, business leaders are planning for what an eventual return to work might look like and how technology will facilitate a shift back to the office. A period of optimization will be essential for organizations to ensure that the emergency measures put in place at the beginning of the quarantine remain robust and adaptable for the future.

No shortcuts with digital transformation.

IT departments should now reflect and take stock of their IT estate and ask themselves the following questions:

  • Do the emergency solutions implemented quickly just a few months ago work as efficiently as those needed in a post-quarantine world?
  • Is my IT environment secure, robust and resilient enough to withstand the next inevitable shutdown?
  • How do we best support the front-end of the business to ensure that our customers can still buy from us, whatever that may be in the future?

As we look ahead, in order to deliver the right business outcomes, it is crucial that these technology investments are scalable, reliable and effectively managed and that any teething problems are resolved, while at the same time continuing to align with industry best practices, security standards and compliance frameworks.

Different ways to consume IT

Despite being forced to re-evaluate how entire workforces operate, the remote work model has positively impacted many companies, often resulting in lower costs and higher employee productivity. Undoubtedly, many companies will plan for a more permanent flexible work environment. In fact, according to a recent PwC survey, 54% of CFOs plan to make remote work a permanent option. Flexible working is here to stay. This means that secure connectivity, collaboration, and adaptive IT environments will be key features of any forward-thinking organization's technology roadmap.

As a result of the increase in remote working, the demand for hybrid cloud computing services has skyrocketed and organizations are really testing the scalability, flexibility and efficiency that a cloud-based infrastructure offers.

This new reality has prompted enterprises to change the way they think about and consume technology. In today's world, a hybrid cloud option gives organizations the fluidity to provide better support for a remote workforce, with on-demand access to data that is not tied to a central location. Of course, business continuity measures can be dramatically improved with a hybrid option, as the adaptability of cloud solutions allows for minimal downtime or disruption in exceptional circumstances.

The coronavirus pandemic occurred at a pace that organizations had not anticipated, but it has enlightened business leaders about the possibilities of digital transformations through technology and business process adaptation. Organizations that will thrive after the pandemic ends will have balanced their short-term needs with longer-term planning considerations and will be building the resilience their organization needs now.
