Logicalis, a global provider of integrated information and communications technology (ICT) solutions and services, says that Chief Information Officers (CIOs) are more determined than ever to implement digital transformation, despite their frustrated efforts over the past 12 months. These findings come from the company's global survey of CIOs: Logicalis Global CIO Survey 2017/18. The new edition interviewed 890 CIOs from 23 countries in Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia-Pacific, and found that CIOs' optimism about digital transformation progress was down compared to last year.

Overall, while only 11% have no transformation plans, CIOs report meager progress:

  • Only 5% classify their organization as "digital innovators" (down from 6% last year).
  • Few people see their organizations as early adopters (19% compared to 22% reported in 2016)
  • The proportion giving average scores to their organization, characterizing themselves as part of an early majority, increased from 45% to 49%.

CIOs addressing digital transformation processes indicated that factors such as complexity, cost, culture, capabilities, and security are the main obstacles to achieving that goal-44 percent cite complexity of existing technology as the main barrier; 50 percent cite cost; 56 percent say organizational culture is an issue; 34 percent cite lack of capabilities; and 32 percent cite security flaws.

However, CIOs are not discouraged and have big plans to gain control of the situation. When asked how they plan to overcome the barriers to digital transformation:

  • 51% said they plan to replace and/or retrofit existing infrastructure.
  • 51% plan to try to change the culture.
  • 38% plan to overcome skills shortages by increasing training and development.
  • 31% expect to invest in additional security capabilities.

"Change is the norm today. The moment we set a path based on our understanding of the technology landscape, that landscape changes. CIOs must accept that change is constant and work to stay one step ahead, to format change rather than be governed by it," stresses Mark Rogers, CEO of Logicalis Group.
