Society is going through an increasingly accelerated process of transformation towards the digitalization of commerce. That is one of the conclusions of a study prepared by the consulting firm Cifra, which was presented during the eighth edition of eCommerce Day, an event organized by the Chamber of the Digital Economy of Uruguay and the eCommerce Institute.
"The challenge we will have in the next five years will be much more powerful than in the past twenty," said Marcos Pueyrredón, president of the eCommerce Institute, who opened the meeting along with Guillermo Varela, president of CEDU.
The lawyer specialized in Regulation, Public Policies and Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), Mercedes Aramendía, and the president of the National Chamber of Commerce and Services (CNCS), Julio Lestido, analyzed the ways of going through change and the disruptions of this process in a static Uruguay.
On this point, Aramendía considered it essential to generate a joint work between industry, business, government representatives, academia and civil society to "contribute to the development of digital skills needed to be part of this new era we are living".
For his part, Lestido stressed the importance of adapting quickly to the characteristics of this new "totally different" era, through ongoing training. "Undoubtedly we have a great opportunity because the impact that eCommerce is generating in the new digital economy is very important, but we have to be aware that this requires structural changes in our companies. We have to adopt the digital mentality and realize once and for all that we are facing a new customer," he said.
During the round table dedicated to the approach of the necessary talents to succeed in the Digital Ecosystem, the dean of the School of Economics and Administration of the University of the Republic, Jorge Xavier, pointed out that we are facing a crisis of the rational paradigm of the last century, which forces the business world to radically change its models and to study the phenomena that occur with current logics.
Damián Lachaga, general manager of Grupo Mosca and member of CEDU, said that the current stage is extremely rich, as it tries to capitalize on the experience of previous generations and the drive of the most recent ones.
The activity ended with the delivery of the eCommerce AWARD's Uruguay 2019, the highest recognition awarded to companies in the sector in Latin America. The winning companies in this edition were Buquebus, Géant, Xuruguay, Fenicio, Prex, Rapsodia, Onetree, Jamón Y Eso and Mercado Libre.
At the same time, Epic was awarded as the outstanding Uruguayan startup during the pitch at the eCommerce Startup Competition, an initiative that aims to support Latin American projects with the greatest potential for development in the eCommerce and Internet Business ecosystem. The winning company is a photography studio focused 100% on product photography for eCommerce, producing packshots and 360° presentations for online sales channels.
