The work will be completed in time for the bachelor's and technical degree in information technology, which is linked to the lines of development and programming, testing and technological infrastructure, to begin in 2019. At the moment, only the two-year technician degree is offered, but, according to Utec advisor Rodolfo Silveira, "we are working on the curriculum for the degree, which would allow us to complement the training with two more years of study". It is estimated that this last offer will be available in 2018 or, at the latest, 2019.

The bachelor's degree would complement the training of those who are currently taking the technical course at the Utec, which offers it in Fray Bentos with 100 places and in Durazno with 150. Graduates of the UTU and of courses at the Universidad de la República who wish to obtain a bachelor's degree will also be able to enrol. The technical course, on the other hand, has a blended mode; in fact, 70% of the course is distance learning and the remaining 30% is taught on-site from 9.00 to 17.00, every 15 days. It is expected that the bachelor's degree will continue this modality.

Yesterday, at the signing of the agreement, Utec councillor Graciela do Mato stressed to the press the importance of this degree course: "Any small enterprise or business needs this, so everything we can develop in this area will allow our graduates to enter a changing labour market that needs them". The idea for the degree "came a little bit from the demand of the labour market. It is a very changing area; the productive sector in general is demanding different training. Before, students went to companies without finishing their degree, but now there seems to be a new tendency to have more highly trained people," Silveira told the newspaper.

Graduates are trained to "develop and test small and medium-sized applications with access to databases, taking into account the characteristics, needs and trends of the industry", as well as "participate in the implementation of technological infrastructure projects, taking into account the security and auditing dimensions".

At the moment, Utec has three regional technological institutes: in Durazno, Río Negro and Rivera. In addition, it offers education in Nueva Helvecia and La Paz (in Colonia), with degrees linked to the dairy sector, and in Paysandú, with a degree in Food Analysis.
