Almost five years after the UTEC was set up, the second Regional Technological Institute, the ITR Centro-Sur, will be inaugurated on Friday 1 December at 11 a.m. on the site located at Maciel and Morquio Streets, where the Doctor Emilio Penza Hospital was previously located.

The inauguration ceremony will be attended by members of UTEC's provisional Central Board of Directors, Graciela Do Mato, Pablo Chilibroste and Rodolfo Silveira, national and departmental authorities, legislators, heads of institutions of the National Public Education System (SNEP) and representatives of the productive sector.

A key aspect for the choice of Durazno as the site of the Centro-Sur RTI was the high demand for tertiary education and the high concentration of young people in the region.

Signing of the contract

UTEC recalls on its website that in February 2016 the signing of the gratuitous bailment took place by which the Municipality of Durazno granted the University the property located in the old hospital, which was destroyed and abandoned.

At the end of April of the same year, work began on UTEC's South Central RTI.

The recovery of the existing infrastructure is interspersed with new internal facilities and the creation of a new two-storey building at the back of the site.

The ITR is a modern building, equipped with state-of-the-art equipment for the development of laboratory practices by the students of the three careers taught in the region: "Tecnicatura en Tecnologías de la Información, la Ingeniería en Energías Renovables y la Ingeniería en Riego, Drenaje y Manejo de Efluentes" (Information Technology, Renewable Energy Engineering and Irrigation, Drainage and Effluent Management Engineering).

In addition, at 2 p.m., a ceremony will be held at which 16 students will receive the title of Higher University Technician in Information Technology.

These are students of the first generation of this career, which began in 2015 in the department of Durazno and since 2017 has also been taught in Río Negro.
