49% have fiber optic connection, which places Uruguay among the top 10 countries with more homes connected to this system. Meanwhile, 100% of companies use fiber optic Internet. The head of Antel, Andrés Tolosa, said that the submarine cable, fiber optics and the Data Center are the "digital ecosystem".
In his presentation at the business meeting organized by Somos Uruguay on Thursday 28th at the Sheraton Hotel, the president of Antel, Andrés Tolosa, referred to the connectivity of Uruguayan homes. He reported that 80% are connected to the Internet, a figure that exceeds that of European countries. In 2008 that percentage was 20%.
As for fiber optics, he confirmed that 49% of homes have this type of connection, while in companies, the figure is equivalent to 100%. The hierarch assured that Uruguay is among the top 10 countries with the highest percentage of homes connected to the Internet by fiber optics. "Among those top 10 countries there is no European country. Europe is far below those indicators. Those who are first are Asian countries, some Arab and then Uruguay," he reported. Tolosa recalled that in 2011 there was not a single Uruguayan home connected by fiber optics.
"All this makes the quality of the connection much higher and allows that in the future there will be no limitations in terms of connection possibilities, bandwidth expansion, business needs in that bandwidth," he added.
According to him, in wireless mobile technology, Uruguay is also in an excellent position. "It is close to 80% penetration with 4G LTE technology, which is the latest mobile technology available. Other countries in the Americas do not exceed 40%," he said.
Tolosa said that in recent years Antel has developed major projects: a submarine cable base that in the coming years will support the other layers; fiber optics to the home, for homes and businesses, and the Data Center opened in 2016, near Pando.
The president of Antel said that these three major bases enabled the development of 4G LTE technology and will enable 5G technology, as well as the Internet of Things.
