Uruguay wants to have more commercial presence in Spain in areas such as information and communication technologies, said Industry Minister Carolina Cosse on Wednesday in Montevideo.

Cosse made these statements in a speech at the Official Spanish Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Navigation (Camacoes).

"There are very new areas, in which both countries have an important development, in which we should make an effort to give more opportunity to Uruguayan entrepreneurs to place their products or services in Spain, in the areas of information technology," said the minister in reference to fields in which Uruguay has positioned itself very solidly in recent years thanks to its technology cluster, especially software and video games.

The hierarch stressed that trade between Uruguay and Spain is "very vast" and said that there is a significant potential to increase sales from Uruguay to the European country.

"We export mainly beef, soybeans, citrus, leather and Spain was one of the top ten destinations for Uruguayan soybeans in 2015 (...), but everything in the world has a back and forth and to deepen trade we think there is also a very important potential to increase sales from Uruguay to Spain," he assessed.

The minister said that in addition to technology, exports can be boosted in sectors such as food products, chemicals, rubber, plastics and machinery, among others.

With respect to the development of renewable energies, after a national record in electricity generated by solar energy was announced on Monday, Cosse assured the press that this matrix is growing remarkably.

"Solar energy is not the renewable energy that has the highest percentage but it has been growing in recent years (...). When we incorporate more renewable energies, solar energy will be at the forefront of the issues because it has been gaining in price competitiveness at the international level (...) so it will be an energy of the future," he concluded.
