An app that saves lives

31/05/17

Sitot is the first application that notifies in case of a traffic accident.
Reading time: 3 minutes

Sitot is the first application in Uruguay for the detection and notification of traffic accidents. It is a free app, and its goal is to reduce the waiting time between a person suffers an accident and receives the response of medical aid.

The application, which has the support of Incubadora Sinergia and the backing of ANII, works as follows: in case of an accident, the cell phone sensors detect the impact and automatically notify the victim's location within 90 seconds to the emergency contacts previously scheduled. In those 90 seconds, the person can manually stop the countdown in case he/she does not need help.

Sitot has a special algorithm that interprets the data coming from the sensors present in any smartphone. The accelerometer and gyroscope provide the phone with data on speed, impact G-force and vehicle rotation. What the app does is to interpret this data and automatically determine whether to notify the selected contacts.

Another of its features is a panic button that can be easily activated in case of alarm or fire, and it is also possible to enter the medical information or medical history of the person downloading the service.

The application, which is available for Android and IOS, has the advantage that it works from the moment you install it on your cell phone, and does not require any activation at the time of getting into the car.The creator of this application is Fiorella Bergamaso, a 23 year old graduate in International Business, who came up with the idea after learning about statistics and data on traffic accidents in Uruguay. "One of the numbers that caught my attention is that 62% of people who suffer an accident do not reach the hospital, and die at the scene of the accident," said Bergamasco.

According to the entrepreneur, to understand this figure, it is necessary to take into account what happens after the accident. "When a person crashes, they may be unconscious or unable to call for help, and then they must wait for a third party to find them and call for medical help. This margin can be 4 minutes or 4 hours. And then the person is at the mercy of luck".

Bergamasco's interest in road safety dates back to her childhood, when she lost someone close to her in a traffic accident. And a few years ago, she saw how someone close to her was left unprotected because they didn't have quick attention after an accident. "That's when I started to get more interested in the subject, I saw that there was a problem and I wanted to find a solution," Bergamasco confesses. “

Yellow May.

The app takes on special relevance in this month of Yellow May, the campaign that aims to promote and raise awareness about road safety. And while prevention is better than cure, improving the effectiveness of post-accident care also saves lives. "If we think about it, there are prevention campaigns, and also efforts by the emergency services to speed up response time, but there is a lack of a campaign to reduce the waiting time between when the accident occurs and when a third party discovers it and calls for help," explains Sitot's creator.

Sitot's business plan for the future is to cooperate with agents such as 911, the Chamber of Emergencies, insurance companies, and all institutions that may respond in case of an accident. "The application has medical information and geolocation of the user in case of an accident and therefore the goal is to provide information to all these agents, so that they can use them for the benefit of the victim," concludes Bergamasco.

One of those chosen by Incubadora Sinergia

The app was one of those selected by Incubadora Sinergia for its mentoring program. According to Laura Amaya, head of media at the incubator, Sitot caught the company's attention because it is a different venture. Amaya highlights that it is a native mobile application that created a valuable algorithm, and also meets the innovation factor that identifies the Incubator".

At the moment Incubadora Sinergia has 31 incubated projects and each one received U$S25,000 from ANII. All projects must have a differential factor and be innovative. The incubation and acceleration program under which Sitot and the other ventures are under seeks to take the startups to another level. When they arrive at the Incubator, they are projects that are ready to start selling and commercializing, and the Incubator's methodology provides the entrepreneurs with tools so that they can grow quickly. This is done, among other things, through various marketing, sales, communication and product workshops. This initial growth process, which can normally take two or three years, is accelerated to one year thanks to the support of the Incubator.
