The 3rd Meeting of Smart Cities is coming up

21/07/17

On August 2 and 3, for the third consecutive year, the Smart Cities meeting will be held at the IM Conference Center, with the participation of regional experts in innovation.
Reading time: 2 minutes

The conferences are coordinated and organised by our Sustainable and Smart Development department with the aim of exchanging experiences and knowledge, generating spaces for reflection and planning, and informing citizens about what a smart, sustainable and inclusive city is all about.

The Smart Cities meetings began in 2015. Cristina Zubillaga, director of Sustainable and Intelligent Development of the commune, reported that the first meeting was focused on "hearing the proposals of different organizations and companies working on the issue of smart cities.

The second edition of the meeting was held in 2016 in conjunction with the 6th ITU Green Standards Week, so the event took on an international character. Montevideo hosted several experts on innovation, sustainable development and the application of technology to management. "More than 40 international exhibitors came and 1300 people registered, which, compared to 2015, meant a doubling of attendance," said Zubillaga.

The director of Sustainable Development said that in this third meeting "we have more experience and maturity, so we plan to focus on true stories of innovation. That is, to analyze what things are happening in cities around the world in terms of innovation.

The 3rd edition will work on the different proposals and experiences carried out by innovative cities, such as applied data science - "big data"-, analysis of social networks and their impact on participation, and new platforms -such as Block Chain- to modernize registration systems.

"For this administration these issues are of special interest, since we launched our Digital Proximity project, which involves using some of these platforms," said Zubillaga. In that sense he added: "With the project we seek to achieve a two-way communication with the population, initially related to the works that are being carried out in Montevideo".

In addition to the experiences of different smart cities, other topics related to the application of technologies in management issues will also be presented at the meeting.

In the case of Montevideo, the selected proposals of the challenge that the IM carried out together with the ANII will be presented, where a competitive fund was created to finance innovative projects focused on providing solutions in areas of interest, such as the use of public transport in the city.

In parallel to the speeches, there will be exchange activities. There will be a workshop for girls and boys, where the proposal will be to imagine the Montevideo of the future. At the same time, a new instance of the Girls in Tech meeting will take place, as well as a women's hackathon.

TECHNOLOGIES FOR A MORE HUMAN CITY

The conference will be attended by international, regional, national and departmental authorities; businessmen and entrepreneurs; university representatives; students; as well as citizens who are linked to innovation and development issues in the city.

Among the main international speakers will be Andrés Carpanzano (Canada) and Carlos Gadsden, from UNAM (Mexico), while at the national level, authorities from AGESIC, ANII, Plan Ceibal and ANTEL, among others, will participate.

The 3rd. meeting will also have a Women's Table, where they will work on technologies and smart cities, from a perspective of equity and gender.
