Autonomous vehicles, buildings that self-regulate their energy consumption, intelligent lighting that adapts to the weather or the time of day, domestic robots that can be controlled from a mobile phone.

These applications, which until not long ago seemed like science fiction, are already among us and are developing at great speed. Here in Uruguay this trend is not seen from afar. On the contrary, the Information Technology sector aspires to transform our country into an important place for the development and growth of these possibilities.

To this end, last week the Open Digital Lab was launched, a public-private initiative that transforms part of the Latu Park (Technological Laboratory of Uruguay) into a laboratory for the testing and development of these and other innovations.

In a new edition of La Mesa TIC we know in detail this initiative. For this purpose, we received Flavio Caiafa, Civil Engineer from the Universidad de la República, president of the National Agency for Research and Innovation (ANII); Silvia Emaldi, Computer Systems Engineer from the School of Engineering, president of the board of UTE; Leonardo Loureiro, Computer Engineer, president of the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technologies (CUTI) and manager of Quanam; and the Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining, Omar Paganini, Electrical Engineer.
