It will be the first exhibition planned to celebrate the tenth edition of Ingeniería deMuestra (IdM), the scientific and technological exhibition organized by the Faculty of Engineering of the University of the Republic (Fing-Udelar) and its Julio Ricaldoni Foundation. Montevideo, Tacuarembó and Rocha will also have their innovation and engineering exhibition.
Projects from Salto, Paysandú and Montevideo will be exhibited in IdM Salto, activity that will take place on September 7th and 8th, from 4pm to 9pm, in the ground floor hall of the Cenur LN of Salto of the Udelar.
The opening ceremony will be held on Friday at 4.30 pm, in the Aula Magna Esc. Eugenio Cafaro. The Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining, Carolina Cosse; the mayor of Salto, Andrés Lima; the dean of the Fing of Udelar, María Simon; the director of Cenur LN, Graciela Carreño; and the president of the Uruguayan delegation of the Mixed Technical Commission of Salto Grande, Gabriel Rodríguez, will take the floor.
Sun, bits and equations
Nine of the proposals from Salta are from the Water Department, six from the Solar Energy Laboratory and one from the Mathematics and Statistics Department. Twelve projects from Paysandú will be exhibited by the Department of Biological Engineering.
Meanwhile, the various Fing institutes in Montevideo will also make their contribution. Surveying will participate with two projects, the Institute of Electrical Engineering will present twelve, the Institute of Computer Science will present one, and the Institute of Fluid Mechanics and Environmental Engineering will present seven.
There will also be the presence of the Mixed Technical Commission of Salto Grande and the Administrative Commission of the Uruguay River.
Other activities will be added to the exhibition of the projects: a Hydraulic Ingenuity and Construction of Bridges with Non-Traditional Materials Competition; "My project in 180 seconds", where they will present their degree theses and research projects; a Treasure Hunt (using the GNSS system); a Dynamic measurement with topographic instruments; a Geophysics Demonstration with a ground penetrating radar. Visits to the Solar Energy Laboratory and the Salto Grande Binational Hydroelectric Complex are also planned.
Meanwhile, there will be a space called Listening Engineering, where companies can present their concerns to evaluate a possible solution by FING researchers; and another called Imaginary, aimed at disseminating open and interactive mathematics.
Saturday 8 September will close with a musical performance by local artist Walas Menoni. The electronic music show will start at 21.00 h.
The coastline takes centre stage
Pablo Gamazo, director of the Water Department at Cenur LN, said that there is "great expectation" for IdM-Salto. He said that about five years ago they did an "unofficial version" of the show on the coast, but most of the projects exhibited were from Montevideo. This year, however, Cenur will be "protagonist" and will be able to "show all the advances that have been made over the years in the Faculty of Engineering of the Interior", he explained.
In addition to letting the public know what they are doing, Gamazo valued the exhibition as an instance of "informal accountability of how public money is being spent". It is also an opportunity to "awaken vocations": "it is a perfect instance to be able to excite children with this, which is sometimes so thankless because it involves a lot of counting, a lot of mathematics, but they see that these are things that are real, that they can touch, that they can see, that they can do and that they are within their reach". It should be noted that young people from Salto and other neighbouring towns are expected to attend.
Finally, the teacher said that IdM Salto is an opportunity for the people of the region to feel "proud of what is being achieved here".
The exhibition was declared of Departmental Interest by the Departmental Board of Salto, while IdM was declared of National Interest by the Presidency of the Republic.
