The internet of things (IoT) not only brings business opportunities and productivity improvements. It also poses security challenges against potential cyber attacks, and poses challenges for human resources departments as robots replace workers.
These will be the central topics to be discussed at the third LATAM IOT & TECH FORUM, which will take place on 13-14 August at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Santiago, Chile.
The event, organised by LATAM B2B EVENTS, will be attended by high-level government authorities, national and international business executives, academics, consultants and representatives of trade associations.
Andrés Couve, head of the new Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation, will open the forum with a presentation on the government's plans to fund research, innovation and the development of new technologies in order to achieve sustainable growth for the country.
Another speaker will be the representative of the Communications Regulation Commission (CRC) of Colombia, Germán Arias, who will speak on the need for government bodies to move towards regulatory flexibility, given the significant changes facing the industry, following the advance of IoT.
Arias' talk is pertinent given that the country's Congress has just approved a legal reform that will allow the merger between the CRC and the television regulator ANTV. This is part of a regulatory simplification strategy designed to adapt the emerging digital content creative industries to this new scenario.
The event features talks and panels on key emerging technologies such as Blockchain, IoT, 5G, Big Data, artificial intelligence, which will be given by multinational technology companies such as Qualcomm, Ericsson, SAP, Microsoft, IBM and NEC.
The president of the Maritime Port Chamber, Daniel Fernández Kopríc, will talk about the impact of digital transformation on the talent and culture of organisations.
During the forum, real cases and concrete examples in industries will be highlighted.
The state-owned company Codelco and the copper commission Cochilco will discuss the effects of automation in the mining industry. Javier Ruiz del Solar, who heads an innovation unit for the mining industry at the University of Chile, will speak on the same topic.
The renewable energy industry will be key for Chile, given the commitment of President Sebastián Piñera's government to be part of the list of carbon neutral countries by 2050, such as the UK, France, Spain, Germany and the Netherlands.
The importance of the adoption of advanced technologies, as well as the need to have a clear roadmap to meet this commitment, in this context, the third LatAm IoT & Tech Forum will feature presentations by renowned experts such as Javiera Aldunate, director of the World Energy Council, and José Ignacio Escobar of Acciona Energía.
Other industries that are leading pilot tests are those in the retail sector. The forum will present a success story from global retailer Walmart and a case study of the use of IoT and Blockchain in the wine industry, by Ángel Izurieta from the consulting firm EY.
Cyber security is a growing issue of concern affecting all industries. No one is safe. A security strategy is a central pillar of any corporate digital transformation plan.
In order to go deeper into this and address the level of risk of cyber attacks to which we will be exposed by connecting millions of things to the Internet, the third Latam IoT & Tech Forum will feature a panel of prominent personalities: Gabriel Bergel, Chief Security Ambassador of Elevenpaths, Telefónica Group; Carlos Landero, President of the Computer Security Incident Response Team, CSIRT; and Marco Real Rivera, Business Leader IBM Security.
Innovation is crucial to move forward on this path. For this reason, the event will feature a talk by renowned Chilean entrepreneur Carla Muttoni, member of Singularity University. There will also be a panel on IoT innovation with important speakers, such as Sebastián Díaz, director of StartUp Chile; Aníbal Carmona, president of the Argentinean Chamber of Software Industry and Richard Haensel, co-founder of Zissmo, a peer-to-peer platform designed to connect companies with investors around the world.
The forum will close with a panel discussion entitled "Smart Cities and the digitalisation of cities", with participants including Gabriel Prudencio Flaño, Head of the Sustainable Energy Division of the Ministry of Energy; Álvaro Undurraga, Metropolitan Regional Director of CORFO, and Herve Delhumeau from the Japanese technology company NEC.
