10/09/18

UTEC present at DataCamp, an instance to promote the exchange of knowledge and a better use of open data.
Reading time: 2 minutes

After the workshops held in early August at the Southwest RTI in Fray Bentos and the South-Central RTI with the aim of informing on the use and potential application of data to develop research and design new services for citizens, the DataCamp, an instance to promote the exchange of knowledge and a better use of open data, was held in Montevideo on 28 and 29 August.

With the slogan "Understanding data: infographics, stories and interactives", 60 people participated, including students, teachers, communicators and technicians from organisations.

During two days, tools and experiences on data journalism, how to use national budget and government procurement data, how to tell stories with data, etc. were presented.

The activity was supported by the Office of Planning and Budget (OPP), the State Procurement and Contracting Agency (ACCE), UTEC, UCU, UdelaR and UM. The Open Knowledge Foundation Argentina, Open Contracting Partnership and the Latin American Open Data Initiative (ILDA) also collaborated.

On the last day, five teams presented their projects. Two of them were awarded prizes:

"Gaining ground" on the identification of dwellings and conservation of architectural heritage. Matilde Fierro (student of the Degree in Information Technologies -LTI- and Mechatronics) and Matías Rodríguez (student of Mechatronics) participated, together with other people from different institutions.

The second group was made up exclusively of UTEC students and collaborators and focused on "Geolocation and characterisation of biomedical technology available in health centres in Uruguay". The participants in this group were Gloria Oholeguy (Biomedical teacher and LTI teacher), Martín Román and Valeria Cardozo (LTI student), Rafael Alvariza from the International Relations Unit and Irina Sánchez from the Academic Direction.

The five teams that submitted projects were as follows:

Team 1. Geolocation and characterisation of biomedical technology available in health centres in Uruguay.

Make information on the location of existing biomedical technology available to the public.

Team 2. Gaining ground

It proposes a platform that makes it possible to generate a collaborative map of available geolocated housing, to see its distribution and allow neighbours to propose solutions.

Team 3. Perception and reality. #SeeIfYouKnowTheCosta

The team proposes that the user can find the initial trend on a web page, as well as the user's perception of the actual data. In this way, the user's knowledge of the indicators can be tested.

Team 4. Prodca

It proposes a platform that offers real-time assistance on the labour market and its demands according to the area of knowledge and skills acquired. The aim is to provide a service focused on future students and graduates, to visualise the job projection in order to choose the career, as well as the necessary competences of the current labour market.

Team 5. Promotion of the Social and Solidarity Economy through state purchases.

Do State bodies correctly apply the provisions of Article 9 of the Draft Law "Promotion of the Social and Solidarity Economy through State Procurement"? The proposal is to develop a portal where compliance with these purchases can be monitored.
