This May 17, the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technologies (Cuti) joins the commemoration of World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD), which commemorates the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention in 1865 and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The date aims to stimulate awareness and reflection on the possibilities that the use of the Internet and other information and communication technologies (ICTs) can offer to societies and economies.
In recent years, Uruguay has reduced the digital divide but still faces several challenges to achieve greater ICT development. Cuti carries out programs such as "i3: +ideas +initiatives +innovation", an initiative aimed at supporting the creation and strengthening of innovation capabilities in companies in the technology sector; ImprovIT, a training cycle that aims to strengthen entrepreneurs and ICT entrepreneurs in key areas for the development of their business; and agreements with various government organizations that are committed to innovation and to transform the information industry into one of the main sectors of the country's economy.
"The figures released this May 17 by the Presidency of the Republic show a significant reduction in the digital divide. In Uruguay, 77% of low-income households have access to the Internet, when in 2006 only 1% had this possibility. We are pleased to see these advances in these indicators, but that does not mean that we should lower our guard. That is why at Cuti we are always thinking about developing programs related to ICT, which help to consolidate the progress that Uruguay has made in this area," said Leonardo Loureiro, Cuti's director.
