How Facebook recognizes who we tag or why Mercado Libre knows what we want to buy and gives us the right recommendation are questions that have their answer in one of the most revolutionary technologies of the moment, Machine Learning, a branch of artificial intelligence. Tryolabs, a Uruguayan company dedicated to its development and exporting to the main markets in the world, seeks to interest local developers and organizes introductory talks.

First, an open call was held at Tryolabs for the general public. Then, the first "Machine Learning 101" was presented, an event aimed at developers who wanted to learn more about this technology. But the success was such that it ended up being two and now, with the support of the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (Cuti), a third one was announced with sold-out spaces and a hundred attendees.

At the opening of this third event, Martín Alcalá Rubí, CEO of Tryolabs and director of Cuti, highlighted that today software is in all activities of daily life and that this is very relevant for Uruguay. "This industry without chimneys does not require large investments to develop, but an excellent education, which exists here and opens great opportunities in this sector," he said.

Using his own path as an example, he recalled that "in the beginning it seemed crazy that we could make this type of software from here and sell it to important markets around the world. However, seven years later, we are two companies, Tryolabs and Monkeylearn, with more than 30 people working".

Within this prolific software industry, the businessman added, the emergence of artificial intelligence is comparable to the emergence of electric power. "Just as electricity modified all the industries of the 20th century, artificial intelligence can do the same today," Alcalá Rubí emphasized.

Export quality

This enormous potential and the certainty -based on their experience- that products can be developed from Uruguay for Silicon Valley, for example, is what motivated Tryolabs to hold this series of talks. "The intention is to show what we do, interact with developers, capture their attention and also share with the community what we know, what we learn on a daily basis", explained Martín Fagioli, a member of the company's Business Development and Marketing area.

Meanwhile, Alejandro Martinez, leader of the Business Development area, added that this "is something that happens very frequently in the software community, large companies in the world release knowledge, data, algorithms for others to apply them, improve them and everyone can grow".

In this sense, Cuti seeks to give a strong impetus to the training of young people in technologies, promoting activities that attract new generations to the industry. Meetings have been held with the Ministry of Labor and Social Security to advance joint actions to promote the training of talent in the area of ICTs, an important element for the development of the country.
