The latest survey conducted by the Uruguayan Chamber of Information Technology (Cuti), corresponding to 2014, reflects a sharp deterioration in exports in the sector, also impacting on the number of people employed. Compared to the previous year, foreign sales fell by 7.62%.

However, domestic sales increased by 17.85% in the period under review, bringing the total turnover of the information technology (ICT) sector to US$ 1.01 billion, an amount equivalent to 1.76% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

"The level of total sales achieved by the industry shows its importance in the Uruguayan economy. At the same time, the decline in exports and the loss of jobs concern us and show that ICT companies in Uruguay are facing a very complex scenario," said Carlos Caetano, president of Cuti. "Some partner companies are relocating their operations in search of more competitive conditions from which to offer their products and services.

Regarding foreign sales, Caetano highlighted the drop in exports to the United States, which fell by 42% compared to 2013, which continues to be the main destination for the sector's foreign sales, accounting for 23.1% of the total.
