As a result of the pandemic, online shopping and payments took a major leap forward... and also became a solution in the last year for thousands of businesses that were able to retain their clientele in times of reduced mobility.

In Uruguay -as in much of the world- a change of habits towards a greater use of electronic means of payment over cash was taking hold and the use of e-commerce sites also advanced.

According to the latest data from the Central Bank, in 2020 for the first time electronic payments (i.e. debit cards and electronic money, transfers, web payments, applications, automatic debits) surpassed cash and checks in Uruguay.

That meant that out of every $ 100 pesos paid, $ 61 were made electronically and $ 39 by traditional means, when at the end of 2019 they were $ 50 and $ 50 respectively.

What does this expansion of e-commerce and electronic media imply? Is this trend here to stay beyond the pandemic?

In a new edition of La Mesa TIC we find out what is being done in our country in these two areas.

For that, we received Leonardo Álvarez, managing partner of Fenicio, a company that provides a platform for the development of online stores; Pablo Moreira,Industrial Engineer and manager of the Value Added and Multimedia Division of ANTEL; Jorge Pereyra, Systems Engineer, director of Netgate and eXpand, is in charge of Ene.com, Netgate's platform to create and manage online stores; and Guillermo Varela, director of Plexo, a company that provides electronic payment solutions, president of the Chamber of Digital Economy of Uruguay.
