We continue sharing stories of women in IT. We present Soledad Rivas, Computer Engineer, who works as a Software Engineer at Tryolabs. In this brief interview she tells us what makes her passionate about her role and the industry.
What do you do? What is your main responsibility at work?
I am a Computer Engineer, graduated from UdelaR. I have been working at Tryolabs for almost 4 years and my main responsibility is to develop solutions related to Machine Learning and Data Science for different clients of the company.
Describe a typical work day:
On a typical work day my day starts by going to the office, but of course since the beginning of the pandemic, the start of my day is limited to opening my computer on my desk at home. Then I check my emails and Slack to see if there is anything urgent I need to take care of or respond to. Once I'm done doing that, I move on to the tasks assigned to the project I'm working on at the moment. That can be from developing Full-stack solutions, Machine Learning or Data Science, to managing communication with clients and planning project tasks.
How did you come to this job?
I was contacted by the Tryolabs Human Resources team.
How long have you been involved in the IT Industry?
This year it will be 7 years since I started my first job in the industry.
What do you enjoy least about what you do?
Uncertainty. In every software project there are associated risks and uncertainty. Particularly, in everything related to Machine Learning and Data Science, the results of a project not only depend on the skills of the developers, but also on the quality of the data and the characteristics of the models used, which has a direct impact on the risk and uncertainty of a project.
What's the best part of what you do?
The best part of what I do is being able to create things and that it only depends on the creativity of the person who is doing it. For me engineering is not an end in itself, but a tool that allows us to help others, so being able to create new things is fundamental.
What has been the most memorable moment/memory linked to your work?
I don't think I have a specific moment, but there is something that I always keep in mind and that is the people I have worked with during all these years. I was lucky that in the two companies where I worked (GeneXus and now Tryolabs) the work teams were made up of people who value each other, who know how to work as a team and where knowledge is shared. So if I have to say a remarkable moment, I would say all the ones I shared and still share with them.
If you weren't doing this, what would you be doing now?
Nowadays I can't imagine doing anything else, so if I wasn't doing this, I'd be learning it on my own.
Any tips or messages you would like to share for those who are interested in science/technology or would like to work in the industry.
My advice is to take the plunge. Give yourself the chance to understand what this industry is all about and to discover all it has to offer. No matter what profile you have, nowadays there are courses, short careers or postgraduate degrees for those who want to enter the industry. I am convinced that the more diverse the team members are the more creative they are, and as I said before, in this industry creativity is the limit.
