Reality that surpasses fiction: the advance of IoT in our lives - By Manuel Vidal (Altimetrik)

What 20 years ago we saw on TV and seemed totally fantastic and futuristic, today is a reality that accompanies us in our days. But how does Internet of Things affect our daily lives? Is it for the better?

When we say IoT, or Internet of Things, we refer to the ability to connect physical devices with each other through the Internet. We can also understand it as the communication from one computer to another computer using the cloud, these very small computers are installed in devices that we use daily as our cell phones, but we can also take advantage of IoT in our homes and businesses. Some of the best known devices currently with this capability are: industrial machines, cameras, televisions, air conditioners, kitchens, washing machines, light control and even cars already come with IoT.

This new capability of the devices allowed us to improve our experiences as users with technology in much more varied ways than in the previous generation of computers in which the most used way was through a keyboard and a mouse. Thanks to devices like Alexa and Google Home, today a virtual relationship with our home is generated, in the sense that we can "talk" to it by asking it to turn on the lights, turn on our TV and put on a Netflix series or control our air conditioning to the temperature we tell it to, all without having to press any key or make a click. Voice commands have become a reality, that which amazed us in science fiction series like Star Trek where the characters talked to the computer is now a reality. Of course there is still a long way to go, but it is not far from our current era.

Just as we have a new technological experience with IoT for the home, the same is happening in the business environment. Industries where there has been rapid progress in proposals of this type are in the health sector, in automobiles, banks and robotization of industries. In the case of the health sector, companies are offering devices that help monitor the physical state of people. Today we can use a smart watch that measures our heart rate and there are even devices that measure blood pressure and send the information to your doctor's computer.

Altimetrik has collaborated with hospitals and healthcare companies to help them make the most of these new technologies that contribute to the wellbeing of patients. We have collaborated in the development of software for telemedicine, we proposed improvements in the patient's experience with hospital services, such as booking hours for polyclinics, obtaining test results and tracking medical history, giving them the ability to do everything from their own mobile and smart watch.

The advance of technology makes it indisputable that, as time goes by, the interaction with many of these solutions happens in a more natural way. As an example, a few years ago the digital pill was created, which allows you to monitor the effect of the pill from a software installed on your cell phone. We hope that all these advances greatly benefit the well-being of people's lives, the way we interact with doctors and health services is advancing very favorably in improving waiting times, lowering costs of services and earlier prevention of diseases.

Another sector where Altimetrik has been collaborating is the automotive sector. In recent years, we have witnessed how the sector is rapidly increasing the number of technological proposals that use IoT. In our case we managed to build software that offers the user the ability to turn on and off their car, lock and unlock their locks from their cell phone or smart watch. We also managed to research and learn the possibilities that exist in the user experience using voice commands to control the car.

There are very interesting cases where we want to offer our services in order to generate a real impact on people's lives. One of them is the good use of sensors that are being developed in cars, through which we can help prevent accidents, monitor the condition of the car components and notify in case of damage to replace parts in time and better track the maintenance of it. On the other hand, some cities are thinking about how to take advantage of all this information to improve traffic problems and even optimize the electricity consumption of traffic lights based on the flow of cars passing through them.

The possibilities in the IoT field are very promising, allowing us to generate a real impact on the ecosystem in which we live. That is why in Altimetrik we are very focused on continuing to advance our knowledge in the area, in order to support more companies in the development of IoT solutions.
