UTEC began enrollment for 2019 with the offer of new career and the goal of reaching 2,400 students

The Technological University (UTEC) began the enrollment process for the next academic year in the centers located in Durazno, Fray Bentos and Rivera, with the projection of going from 1,700 students to 2,400 and 3,000 in 2020.

The growth of the entity, both in premises and in enrolment, has been constant since it started operating with 44 students in 2014.

Graciela do Mato, UTEC counselor, in an interview with the Secretariat of Institutional Communication, reported that enrollment in this university is divided into two periods, one valid until the 28th of this month and the other from January 20 to February 15. He also explained that the essential requirement for admission is to have passed the baccalaureate of higher secondary education or technological education.

Registration is done through the UTEC website, through a simple procedure that includes the request of some documentation. There is a help tutorial and a window of frequently asked questions, as well as a consultation mechanism to evacuate doubts.

"We do an important follow-up of the future students, so that they don't get lost in the process and really feel that they are entering an institution that will accompany them," Do Mato said.

There are quotas for the different careers, considering that although UTEC's infrastructure has grown, with three new buildings and modern technology, it is not prepared to absorb an unlimited number of students. This is also due to the practical profile of the courses, which focus on specific skills and competencies that must be acquired in order to graduate, he added.

"We are committed to quality and, for this, we understand that we must have small groups," he argued. Thus, in each site there are no more than 50 students per course, with the exception of Information Technologies, which has a larger number of places, due to the high demand generated by the proposal and because it is carried out in a virtual way in 70% and face-to-face in the remaining 30%.

If the number of registrations exceeds the number of places available, a draw will be made before a notary public, he explained.

To the wide offer available, which includes Engineering in Logistics, Renewable Energies, Irrigation and Effluent Management and Mechatronics, among others, all of them with a clear link to the productive sector and of growing demand, is now added the Agro-environmental Engineering course, whose enrollment showed a high interest, said Do Mato.

All the careers have an intermediate degree of technologist, for a quick labor insertion, but they project their educational continuity with an engineering career.

"UTEC is a brand that still needs to be positioned, but in these years we have seen that it is being achieved," said the counselor. "When you go to any of the three cities in the interior of Uruguay where UTEC centers are located, everyone knows where they are, something unthinkable in the past," she emphasized.

"The kids know the careers and feel that there is a new public university in Uruguay, aimed at the interior departments," added Do Mato, who pointed out that the three main campuses in Fray Bentos, Durazno and Rivera have secondary campuses in Paysandú, Soriano and Colonia.
