As she prepares for the Rio Olympics where she will compete in the laser radial yachting class, Dolores Moreira started working with a technological solution created by IBM Uruguay.
The company, which works in the business world and is internationally linked to tennis, golf and cycling, has created a technological solution to optimise the sailor's performance.
"In sailing there are many variables that affect the competitions. The programme provides me with data on these variables, it allows me to see what we have strengths and what we need to improve," Moreira, 17, told Referí.
"We tested it in Punta del Este in a few practice sessions, we still need to see the data. For now we have three variables: the speed of the boat, the heel of the boat and the location. We need to add more training sessions to gather data and see how it can help us," he said.
"I'm not so much interested in speed, I'm interested in seeing how much speed affects a movement I make on the boat. This programme helps with that. If I turn the sail five degrees, I want to know how much speed I lose.
Heel is the degree to which the boat leans to one side or the other: "If I'm sailing and I have the sail on the left, the wind comes in from the right and the boat heels to the left. IBM Analitycs can take that data to see what I can improve.
"Tracking is like having a GPS on the boat, I have my course in training, which helps me to plan my racing, to see my mistakes," said Lola.
"IBM has a tradition of working in sport and applying analytics solutions to improve athlete performance. We want to show analytics capabilities beyond the corporate business. We approached Lola because of her current situation, because she is a world-class athlete and because she still has a long way to go," Diego Aguirre, leader of Analytics for IBM Uruguay, told Referí.
"The components of the solution have three layers: the collection of data, the analysis of that data to find correlations between those variables and the presentation of those results to Lola and her coach (Luis Chiapparro)," Aguirre added.
The project has just started so it will not be used in Rio. Moreover, it cannot be used in competition but only for training.
