Reading time: 2 minutes

Context

In order to have quantitative indicators on information security, Datasec decided in 2015 to carry out a quantitative survey, whose field work was carried out by Grupo Radar.

The survey is carried out in the context of the Uruguayan Internet User Profile Report that Grupo Radar conducts annually.

Below we present the main results of the survey conducted during 2016, which includes data on compliance with good practices and basic information security controls by Uruguayans.

This presentation does not include the breakdown by Gender, Socio-Economic Status, Internet Use, Age and Geographic Area, which is available upon request.

Some conclusions

The free versions of antivirus software are used by 78% of Uruguayans. 12% do not have antivirus software, and this percentage is higher among younger users.

Data from 2015 is confirmed, indicating that 10% of Uruguayans have been victims of some kind of incident (Facebook or Email hacking) and for 5% it had a relevant impact (more than 100.000 Uruguayans).

Ransomware incidents, although they have affected many people and companies, and have been widespread in recent years, do not seem to have affected a significant percentage of Uruguayans.

31% of Uruguayans indicate that they never back up their data, being seriously exposed in case of being a victim of hacking or malicious software.

Although these data are associated only with end-users, they provide information to companies and authorities on the level of awareness of Uruguayans, and how they behave as users and customers of digital services. This data should be considered when defining their communication and awareness actions for the use of good practices and defined controls.

Technical specifications

A self-administered online survey of 2202 cases of people aged 12 and over, recruited through contracted Facebook ads.

This was applied to all issues related to the different uses of the internet.

Quotas were previously defined by age range, gender and strata of localities according to their population, according to the universe of internet users that emerged from the telephone survey conducted.

In order to correct for the natural bias of this sample, the results were weighted according to the High / Medium / Low internet users variable that was investigated in both surveys.

The Universe referred to in this report is:

  • Total population over 12 years of age: 2,726,000
  • Internet users aged 12 and over: 2,263,000
  • Internet users aged 18 and over: 1,955,000
