The massive ransomware attack, which occurred last Friday, May 12 worldwide, affected a large part of Latin America, with several examples in the following countries: Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Ecuador. Although the offensive came as a surprise, this is not the first time that threats of this malware in its different versions have been recorded. The most recent history dates back to 2016, although the scope of the attack was much smaller.
As a result of this event, the media echoed the news and consulted Security Advisor, as the main specialized source on the subject. In this sense, Leonardo Berro, Founding Partner and Regional Director of Security Advisor together with Hugo Köncke, Regional Consulting Manager, were interviewed by several of the main local media with the purpose of contributing with suitable knowledge to the subject, as well as advising the population about the precautions and preventive measures.
The cyberattack of global scale leaves us as a legacy several lessons for the future. The following is the reflection of Leonardo Berro, Regional Director of Security Advisor:
1) "Anyone can become a victim of cybercrime, it is not something that affects only large global corporations, but also small and medium-sized enterprises and independent individuals.
2) Cases like the affected hospitals in the UK should serve as an example to raise awareness of the impact of these attacks, and the consequences they have at the citizen level. It is no longer just a business issue, it is now a problem that affects society as a whole.
3) Critical infrastructures will be the next targets of cybercriminals because it involves the whole society, with a high degree of affectation.
In an era in which this news is becoming more and more frequent, cybersecurity becomes a determining aspect when it comes to guaranteeing the operational continuity of companies and also basic services for citizens. As a society we must be forewarned because no one is safe from these attacks and their impact".
The Security Advisor team's goal is to raise awareness among individuals and companies to minimize risks, so it advises: keep updates and defense tools in operating systems up to date.
