Plan Ceibal is among the 50 most innovative education and technology projects in the world. The ranking "Makers and Shakers", as it is called, was conducted by the World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) together with EdTech. The president of Plan Ceibal, Miguel Brechner, is also among the 50 most innovative leaders in the area, the program said in a statement.

Candidates were nominated by EdTech and Wise, and the top 50 list was defined by a 15-member committee representing, among others, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, LinkedIn and Times Higher Education.

In choosing the top 50, the committee considered whether the chosen individual had "a powerful and unique vision for the role of technology in education," whether the proposed initiative was a "creative solution to a challenging education challenge that showcases innovation and use of technology, design, methodology or practice," and the impact their contribution had on society.

Plan Ceibal is on the list along with organizations such as IBM Watson and Khan Academy, and online platforms such as Coursera and edX, Raspberry Pi, Singularity University, Duolingo and Code.org.
